URBAN REFUGE
This new construction home in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood benefitted from being sited on a rare 50’ x 125’ double lot. JAFFE A+I took advantage of the lot size and melded traditional architecture and the simple lines of Asian design to create a haven in the heart of the city. JAFFE A+I conceived an E-shaped plan to create a flow from the inside of the home to the exterior courtyard spaces. This allowed ample, natural light to come into the house, and also supported a sybaritic and restful feeling for the homeowners.
The three distinctive courtyard spaces that extend from the house were designed in coordination with the landscape architect. Masonry details reinforce the composition of the building and hardscaping, while features like a natural stone water fountain, Asian-inspired garden elements and outdoor dining area enhance the outdoor “rooms.” With equal measures of privacy and enclosure, the owners now have a tranquil, spacious sanctuary that provides a respite from urban living.
